[PRINT - MILITARY]. BOWLES, Thomas and John BOWLES.
Military Architecture describing all parts of a Fortification and all that relates to Seiges [sic] Battles Marches of Armies & Incampments; as also to all sorts of warlike instruments used in attacking or defending towns &c.London, Thomas Bowles and John Bowles, 1737. Engraved imaginary bird's-eye view (43 x 61 cm) with the title in a decorated cartouche at bottom right, a second title "Military Architecture" along the top, and hundreds of illustrations of fortifications, artillery, military equipment and hand tools, etc., each with a short descriptive caption.
Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (1 copy); not in OCLC WorldCat.Rare and remarkable engraved sheet showing showing fortifications, artillery and other military equipement and tools, both defensive and offensive. Within the setting of a fantasy bird's-eye view that identifies the "Mediterranean Sea" but otherwise neither depicts nor indicates any location in the real world, all kinds of fortifications, offensive and defensive weaponry and a great number of (hand) tools used for the constructing of military encampments and operation of canons, etc., are depicted and explained, as well as various sorts of ships at sea. This informative compilation of military hardware may very well may have been used as a kind of guide for making plans of sieges and land or sea battles. The London print sellers and publishers Thomas and John Bowles used a format that had became popular in Holland at the beginning of the eighteenth century. With some minor offsetting but otherwise in fine condition. A rare and very informative view of military equipment.

About Us
ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!
In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.
In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
