[MOREAU, Jacob Nicolas].

L'Observateur Hollandois, ou premiere[-quarante-sixième] lettre de M. van ** à M. H**. de la Haye, sur l'état présent des affaires de l'Europe. The Hague, anonymous (letters 1-13, 21, 22 and 36-46), and Liege, Jean François jr. (letters 14-20, 23-35), 1755-1758. Small 8vo. 46 separately published letters bound in 7 volumes. With 46 title pages, each with one of 4 different woodcut decorations. Contemporary tanned sheepskin with gold-tooled spine.

Quérard II, col. 1281; Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (9 compl. sets?); OCLC WorldCat (4 compl. sets?); cf. Lande, Canadiana 656 (separate ed. of a few letters); Sabin 50563 (separate ed. of a few letters); not in Church; Eberstadt; JCB; Le Clerc; Muller, America; Streeter.First edition of a rare collection of letters that successfully attempted to stir up public opinion against English policy in Europe and America during the Seven Years' War, including much information about the colonies in North America and especially Canada (the French and Indian War). Moreau (1717-1804), a French Royalist who established his career with these anonymous letters, quotes official government documents, newspaper articles and other sources. The correspondents mentioned in the title, monsieur Van ** and monsieur H**, may be fictional. All letters are dated from Paris. Each letter was published separately and has its own pagination and signatures, totalling nearly 2300 pages in all. At least some were reprinted in France and Germany, and some were also published in Spanish translation. Quérard notes apparently erronious references to a a forty-seventh letter he had not seen. We have located no copy with more than the forty-six known to the Bibliotheque Nationale and the Zeitschriftendatabank. Copies containing all 46 letters are rare. Most volumes with an armorial bookplate under the front pastedown and each with an embossed library stamp on a free endleaf. A very good set. The binding has been restored, but is still good. A contemporary contraversial view of European politics, especially in Canada, during the Seven Years' War.

About Us

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
