The title of Moonen's book explicitly notes that it is intended both for natives and foreigners. Arnold Moonen was much praised by Vondel and Brandt as a poet and published several poems and sermons as well as some historical and linguistic works. the publication here present is considered his greatest success. Although labelled "childish" by Te Winkel, it was a standard reference book used by philologists untll the end of the eighteenth century. The work by Verwer bound with the present copy bears testimony to the general appreciation of Moonen's work. It is dedicated to Moonen by the esteemed phililogist David van Hoogstraten. Verwer himself, like Moonen a clergyman, published several works on law, and a disputation of Spinoza's Ethica, but only the present single book on philology. Moonen later sent Verwer his comments on the publication, to which Verwer published a response in 1709.Good copies. Valuable early eighteenth-century contribution to the study of Dutch linguistics.

About Us

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
