NANI, Giovanni Batista and "L.T."

Title-page with woodcut publisher's device, a woodcut headpiece and tailpiece and 1 decorative woodcut initial, all copied from Daniel Elzevier. Gold-tooled vellum (ca. 1800?), red morocco spine label.

(2), 106, (2 blank) pp. Rahir 3143; Willems 1362; STCN (3 copies). V. N. V.", Paris, 25 November 1664, the latter interpreted as Signor Vattista Nani Veneto, that is, Giovanni Batista Nani (1616-1678), historian and Venetian ambassadeur to France. The "L.T." who wrote the longer first letter has not been identified. The woodcut materials identify the printer as Foppens in Brussels, well known for his copies of the Elzeviers' publications, so one would suppose he copied the Daniel Elzevier edition with the same date and imprint, and that Elzevier's was the first edition. Curiously, however, Willems argues that in this one exceptional case Elzevier copied Foppens and that the present edition is therefore the first, even though its form and materials are copied from Elzevier. With the bookplate of Rob. De Billy. With the first two leaves partly detached, but still a good copy. Interesting comment on seventeenth-century French politics.

About Us

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
