Hans de Ries (1553-1638) was a prominent Mennonite of the progressive and liberal branch, the "Waterlanders." In this tract he replies to Obbesz.'s 1625 Raegh-Besem (Knuttel 3632), about the nature of the word of God. Contrary to Obbesz.'s opinion, that the word of God means simply what is written in the Bible, De Ries holds the opinion that the word of God also refers to Jesus Christ, who is the word that was transformed. The word of God is therefore more than just a written text but is in fact God himself. De Ries and Obbensz. seem to have taken part in a lively discussion, and later in 1627 Jan Willemsz. responded to De Ries with his own pamphlet (Knuttel 3774). The "woodcut" initial is a casting made from a woodcut, while the interlaced initial is cast type. We have located five other copies, all at the Amsterdam University Library and the Royal Library at The Hague. With the library stamp and deaccession stamp of the Hilversum Public Library on the title-page. A very good copy. The binding with a small tear at the head of the spine. An interesting glimpse into seventeenth-century religious discussion.

Über uns
ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!
In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.
In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
