(24), 132 pp. Wellcome III p. 179; NBG 22, p. 709-710; Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (5 copies); OCLC WorldCat. (7 copies); STCN (3 copies); not in Adams but see 1564 for another edition; not in Waller but see 3854 for another edition.; not in Garrison and Morton but see 5818 for the first edition. The first French work on ophthalmology, drawing on many Greek and Arab sources. First published, in French, in 1585 as 'Traité des maladies de lóeil'. Considered by Garrison and Morton to be the best of Renaissance books on ophthalmology and an epitome of existing knowledge on the subject. This is the second Dutch edition but the first to have been augmented by the well-known Dutch surgeon and ophthalmologist J. Verbrugge, misspelled on the title-page as 'Verbrigge'. With an engraved frontispiece depicting an ophthalmologist at work. Also with numerous recipes for ophthalmologic problems and with an interesting treatise on dentistry, commonly attributed to Guillemeau although it has also been suggested that Verbrugge might be the author. Jacques Guillemeau (ca. 1520-1613) studied under his father in law, the renowned Ambroise Paré, and became surgeon to the king of France. He was the first to describe the repair of a congenital eyelid coloboma, a full-thickness defect of the eyelid, by freshening the edges and suturing their margins.A good copy. A rare book by a famous ophthalmologist with an early tract on dentistry.

About Us

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
