CHEFFONTAINES, Christophle.

Response Familliere a une Epistre Escrite Contre le Liberal Arbitre, & les merites des bonnes oeuvres.Paris, Estienne Petit, 1568. 8vo. With woodcut head- and tailpieces and 7 decorative woodcut initials from 2 series. Eighteenth-century French mottled calf, gold-tooled spine and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, red edges.

(40), 191, (6) pp. Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (1 copy); cf. BMC French, p. 106 (1571 ed.); NBG X, cols. 173-174; not in Adams.Second copy located of the first edition of a Counter-Reformation work by a Bretton Franciscan (and future Archbishop) in response to a publication communicating Protestant views on Justification. In it he defends the Catholic stance through a discussion of the impartial judgement of God and the obtainment of salvation through good works. With a 25-page dedication containing a very partisan discussion of Protestantism in Europe, describing Protestants as cruel savages and even comparing them to cannibals. This appears to be the author´s first publication, and we have located only one other copy (at the Bibliotheque Nationale). Even the second and apparently last French edition (1571) and the Latin edition (1576) are extremely rare. With some marginal defects restored in the first few leaves, but otherwise a fine copy. An interesting defence of Catholic theology and a rather fierce attack on Protestantism.

Über uns

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
