[BIBLE - OLD TESTAMENT - EXCERPTS - LATIN & HEBREW]. LEUS...

Compendium V. Testamenti Hebraico-Chaldaicum.Halle an der Saale, Johann Friedrich Zeitler, 1704. 8vo. Title-page in red and black with the publisher's woodcut "JFZ" cypher monogramme, 1 woodcut headpiece and 1 decorative woodcut initial. Contemporary vellum.

(4), 179, (1) ll. Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (9 copies); OCLC WorldCat. (4 copies); not in Darlow & Moule; Steinschneider.Posthumously published first edition of extracts from the Old Testament in Latin and Hebrew (the latter with, as usual, occasional passages in Aramaic), on facing pages to facilitate comparison, with the Aramaic and Hebrew roots in the extensive notes, compiled by the Utrecht professor Johannes Leusden (1624-1699). The Hebrew Old Testament contains some Aramaic (Chaldee, set in Hebrew type) passages, and Leusden includes some of them here (mostly in Daniel, Ezra and Nehemia), hence the "Hebraico-Chaldaicum" of his title (we are grateful to Abraham Rosenberg for information). The German Hebraist Johann Heinrich Michaelis (1668-1738) and Leusden himself each contributed a three-page Latin preface. At the end are a Latin verse by Petrus Montanus praising Leusden's work, and tables of the books of the Bible and of daily prayers. The title-page notes that the compilation contains extracts from 2289 of the 23,202 verses of the Old Testament. Leusden is famous for his carefully edited editions of the Bible in Greek and in Hebrew, as well as his Hebrew philological works, but the present posthumous compendium is less well known. Further editions appeared in 1718, 1736 and 1757.With contemporary owner's inscriptions by the (Swiss Reformed?) clergyman Nicolaus Zodrell on the title-page and paste-down, and the twentieth-century bookplate of Leonhard Sutter. A very good copy. A compendium of the Old Testament in Latin and Hebrew, including some Aramaic passages and with notes giving the Hebrew and Aramaic roots.

About Us

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
