[NEWS PAMPHLET].

With a woodcut illustration representing the siege of Antwerp on the title-page and an interlaced woodcut ornament on the final page. Modern wrappers.

(7) pp. Weller, Die ersten deutschen Zeitungen 282; VD16, G-1922 (1 copy); Karlsruher Virt. Kat.(4 copies); OCLC WorldCat. (1 copy). An early German news pamphlet reporting on the Duke of Anjou's attack on Antwerp on 9 January 1583 (old style). The Dutch States General Assembly had granted Anjou limited authority over the Netherlands as 'Protector' in 1583 but had quickly grown dissapointed in his role in Dutch government. In an attempt to increase his influence the Duke invaded Antwerp in Januari 1583. However the population resisted the 'French Fury' (alluding to the infamous Spanish Fury of 1576) and Anjou's troops were defeated. Anjou left the Netherlands in June that year. Three minor variants of this news pamphlet are known, all three with the same date and same wording in the colophon (stating that it was 'first printed' at Cologne by Schreiber). VD-16 lists the present edition before the other two, but they probably all appeared in 1583.Disbound and unintrusively mounted in a modern wrapper. Remarkably for such an ephemeral publication, it is in fine condition and only slightly trimmed, with only very minor damage to the fold of the outer bifolium and with two corners torn off. A dog-ear even allows one to determine that only about 2 mm has been trimmed at the fore-edge and 5 mm at the foot (as trimmed, it measures 182 x 140 mm). A good copy. Very early news report on the 'French Fury' at Antwerp in 1583.

About Us

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
