With 30 engraved plates (17 double-page). Tachard was a French Jesuit priest who was sent to China in 1685 along with several fellow Jesuits by Louis XIV in order to study the area and its population and report on it on return. Once arrived the company was taken captive by the Chinese emperor, who sent his ambassador to France with Tachard as an interpreter to demand that ten Jesuit mathematicians be send to the Siamese court in exchange for the release of the party held captive. His book was first published in Paris in 1686.A good copy. Interesting account of the geography, the flora and fauna, and the customs of Siam, Java, and Sumatra.
