Verzameling van Twaalf Kleefsche Outheeden en Gezichten.Amsterdam, Gerrit Tielenburg, 1758-1762. 4to. 8 parts in 1 volume. With 91 engraved views on 46 plates (4 double-page). Contemporary richly gold-tooled red morocco (hundreds of impressions of some two dozen tools forming an elaborate panel design), black morocco spine label, block-printed endpapers with flower motif in blue, green and red paste, gilt edges.

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam III, pp. 221, 383 (Verheelykt Kleefschland): Wurzbach II, p. 48, Liender 1 (1792 issue); for the artist and engraver: Scheen, pp. 40-41, 315; Waller, p. 202; .Rare collection of 91 engraved views of towns and villages, antiquities and other buildings in the province of Cleves, by Paulus van Liender (1731-1797) after Jan de Beijer (1703-1780), here as originally issued in parts with the first part-title still present. Most of the views measure 8 x 12.5 cm, but 6 measure 8 x 26 cm and 1 measures 15.5 x 25 cm). Most of the views are dated (1732-1746), while the plates are dated 1758 to 1762. In an unusual gold-tooled binding with flower motif endpapers, block printed in blue, red and green paste on a background of blue dots. The first part-title says not more than 100 copies were printed and the plates have already been cut to pieces. If this is true, at least the first six plates must have been reissued rather than reprinted in the undated issue with a general title-page and the issue of 1792. The elaborate gold tooled binding is, according to Dr. J. Storm van Leeuwen, curator book bindings Royal Library The Hague, rather unusual and more English than Dutch in style (the endpapers are Dutch, by J. Honig & Zoonen). He notes a similar binding for a dedication copy (for Stadhouder Willem V) of Robert Watson's History der Regeering van Philips II (Rotterdam, Bennet & Blake, 1778. 8vo). Very rare, we have located only one other copy with the present part-title (Bibliotheque National, Paris).The work was originally issued in 8 parts, and the original plan was that each part would contain 12 views on 6 plates. Four parts, however, included one double-page plate each (3 plates with 2 double-length views each and the fourth with 1 double-length and double-height view). The 8 parts apparently contained the following plates. I: 12 views on 6 plates (1758), II: 12 views on 6 plates (1758), III: 10 views on 5 plates (1759), IV: 11 views on 6 plates (1760), V: 12 views on 6 plates (1761), VI: 10 views on 5 plates (1761), VII: 12 views on 6 plates (1762) and VIII: 12 views on 6 plates (1762). This makes 91 views. The description of the Six van Vromade copy, also with 91 views and in the original 8 parts (apparently with all eight part titles) notes that the eighth part-title indicates that the series was complete. The views were reissued with a general title-page, Het Verheerlykt Kleefschland ... behelzende 100 [sic] gezichten (Amsterdam, ca. 1774?) and again without noting the number of prints in 1792. It would seem the 6 longer views were counted as 2 views each and the larger one as 4 views to make 100.With an embossed owner's stamp "R.v.L." (ca. 1900?) on the flyleaf. A fine copy. Rare collection of views by Paulus van Liender in an unusual gold-tooled binding.
