(18) ll. + lithographed title-page and 86 plates. Picarta (5 copies).A rare complete copy ofLutgers' first topographical work, with 86 lithographed plates depicting various mansions and estates along the river Vecht. The plates were published in 17 parts, each containing 5 lithographed plates and a brief explanatory letterpress text occupying one side of a single leaf, plus one additional plate in part 13. The parts in the present copy are dated as follows: 2 (1831), 1 & 3-8 (1832), 9-11 (1833), 12-14 (1834), 15-16 (1835) and 17 (1636), but in some copies part 2 is dated 1832. The title-page (dated 1836) was published in 1836 together with a letterpress introduction (printed on both sides of a single leaf) as part 18, but these two leaves have been bound at the beginning as intended. All plates have been lithographed on very thin 'Chine Appliquée' paper which has been pasted onto heavier leaves. The wrappers are here bound in around their plates, with the title and preliminary leaf added to part 1. We have located only one other complete copy with the original wrappers. The wrappers to parts 2-18 give the title almost exactly as the title-page, but part 1 is printed from a different stone, with the title, "Gezigten te Loendersloot, op Steen Geteekend."In fine condition. Hinges slightly worn and patches of the morocco faded to brown. With the engraved bookplate of Rudolf Hugo Driessen & Caroline E. F. Klein. Lutgers' first topographical work, with all plates in their original lithographed wrappers.

Über uns

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
