HUNNIUS, Aegidius, Salomon GESNER, and Polycarpus LEYSER.
Controversiæ inter Theologos Wittenbergenses de Regeneratione et Electione Dilucida Explicatio.Frankfurt, Joannes Spies, 1594. 4to. Title-page with woodcut publisher's device, 1 decorative woodcut initial, 1 woodcut tailpiece.
(66) pp. Adams H-1184 (1 copy?); OCLC WorldCat (2 or 3 copies); Karlsruher Virt. Kat. (4 to 7 copies); VD 16, H-6029 (3 copies); cf. BMC STC German, p. 424 (1598 ed.).One of the first (1594) editions of an outline of the controversies around certain religious views of the Wittenberg professor Samuel Huber. Its four chapters cover his views on predestination, regeneration, justification and ecclesiology respectively. On each of these points Huber's opinions are critically discussed by three other Wittenberg professors, Aegidius Hunnius, Salomon Gesner and Polycarpus Leyser. Huber's interpretation of Lutheran theology and his critism on that of other prominent Lutherans regularly brought him into conflict with others and eventually got him expelled from the Wittenberg academic community. Spies published three editions at Frankfurt in 1594 (VD 16, H-6028 to 6030), and it is not clear which is the first. H-6028 and the present H-6029 are so similar that it is impossible to distinguish them in many catalogues (VD 16 gives the publication date ending "IIII" and the second line of the imprint in lowercase in our H-6029 but "IV" and uppercase in H-6028). Our edition collates A-H4 I2 and has the fingerprint (following VD17 rules): nci- e-ex i-i- ermu. H-6030 apparently collates A-F4 G2 with fingerprint r.s: m;s- dii- tumu. We have seen neither collation nor fingerprint for H-2028.A very good copy, lacking the final blank leaf. Disbound. Outline of controversies between Wittenberg professors on three issues central to Lutheran theology.

About Us
ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!
In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.
In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
