Translated by Aegidius Albertinus (†1620), secretary to Maximilian I of Bavaria. The first volume gives a detailed description of the events from Christ's conviction and death sentence to his burial. The second is a lengthy analysis and interpretation, word by word, of his last words (here in Latin): Pater ignosce illis quia nesciunt quid faciunt (Father forgive them for they know not what they do), a chapter being devoted to each word. With an index for each volume and with four Latin poems. Aegidius Albertinus is mainly known for his translations of foreign literature, often with a Counter-Reformation message. With a contemporary ownership inscription and a later embossed library stamp on the title-page. Each board has a different panel stamp in a double frame of rolls, the inner roll with heads, and one can decipher the two-line motto at the foot of each panel stamp: on the front board Isaias 9:6 (PVER NATVS EST NOBIS ET/FILIVS DATVS EST NOBIS) and on the back Matthew 3:17 (HIC EST FILIVS MEVS DILE[-]/CTVS IN QVO MIHI COMPLACVI). A very good copy. Binding badly worn. A work on the crucifixion translated from Spanish into German by the secretary of Maximilian I of Bavaria.

About Us
ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!
In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.
In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
