The title is framed by eight woodcut illustrations showing Jesus (above), St Paul (bellow), the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (in the corners), and King David and perhaps St Peter (on the sides). Haymo of Halberstadt was educated by Alcuin at the Benedictine monastery at Tours. His numerous commentaries on both the Old and the New Testament remained popular and several were printed during the sixteenth century. The binding is tooled in a panel design using a rosette and two rolls, one showing allegorical female figures (JUSTIC[IA], LUCRICI[A], PRUDEN[TIA], SVPERB[IA]) and the other showing foliage with a cherub head and two profile heads. With an 1883 bookplate stating the book was bequeathed to the Bishopric of Cornwall by reverend Franke Parker, and an earlier owner's inscription on the title-page. A very good copy, with some water stains in the first 4 leaves and 3 marginal tears or chips. The binding is slightly rubbed and lacks its fastenings, but is still good. Rare sixteenth-century first edition of a ninth-century work.

About Us
ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!
In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.
In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
