(4), 4, (96) pp. GFB, p. 75; Hunt 728; Nissen, BBI 1784; Pritzel 8295; Stafleu & Cowan 10931; not in Natura Artis Magistra; Stiftung Liechtenstein. Beautiful flower book by George Voorhelm Schneevoogt, showing 47 species of flower grown in the famous Voorhelm and Schneevoogt nursery at Haarlem. “The finest 18th century Dutch botanical work” (GFB). Schneevoogt (1775-1850), Dutch gardener and botanist, supplied the flowers, with the plates designed, etched and hand-coloured by Hendrik Schwegman (1761-1816), the whole edited under the supervision of S.J. van Geuns, professor in medicine, herbs and physiology at Utrecht. Volume one was originally published in 12 parts with 36 etchings, but volume two had only reached 4 parts with 12 etchings when the French Revolution brought publication to a premature end. Since no title-page or index ever appeared for the unfinished second volume, its plates are usually bound with the first volume, as here, and some are omitted in some copies. Etchings 41 and 42 share one plate and the former is uncoloured, as always. Each plate is accompanied by a leaf with text in Latin, Dutch, French and German.Fine, large-paper copy. Binding rubbed. A fine copy of a splendid flower book.

About Us

ASHER Rare Books celebrates its 175th anniversary!

In 1830 Adolphus Asher (1800-1853) in Berlin established the firm that still bears its name. He quickly became one of the main agents supplying antiquarian books to the British Museum as well as to eminent nineteenth-century scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin.

In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the new owner moved the company to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books. The management is formed by Michael J. Roos and Julius W. Steiner.
