GRANT, CH.
The History of Mauritius,
or the Isle of France, and the Neighbouring Islands; from their first discovery to the present time; composed principally from the papers and memoirs of Baron Grant, who resided twenty years in the Island. ... Lond: W. Bulmer and Co., 1801. 4to. Or.hf.red straight-grain morocco. Spine gilt and with raised bands. Marbled boards. (spine extremities & corner points rubbed). Corners embellished with the Beckford and Hamilton crests. T.e.g. other edges uncut. (XXII,572pp.). With 3 fold. charts incl. Plan du Port Louis du L'Isle de France, and List of Subscribers. Slightly foxed, but a very nice complete copy of the 1st ed., with a most interesting early provenance, being from the Beckford's Fonthill Abbey Library. This notable English collector (1738-1823) was one of the wealthiest men in England at that time, and this work was used by Matthew Flinders in compiling his book. Subsequently this copy went into the H. Bradley Martin Collection. Desirable.
