Nine volumes. Eight uncut in contemporary half vellum with flat spines, sides marbled and worn on upper edges. Volume 7 (first supplemental volume) in half vellum with three raised bands and rubbed on upper compartment, the others are uniform. Brunet III, 1901 (other editions). A fourth supplemental volume was published in 1749. First published in 1674, it was expanded in several successional editions by other authors until the final edition in ten volumes, 1759. The supplemental volumes are by Claude-Pierre Goujet. The dictionary is arranged alphabetically, with articles on places, people, books, and general subjects intermixed. Peter the Great is supposed to have commanded a Russian translation, and an Italian translation was projected.
