Engr. title,+ (25),+ (blank),+ 1052,+ (81); (20),+ 441; (2),+ 761-1523,+ (blank),+ (56) pp. The engraved title in red and black, and with somewhat later annotations in ink. The title leaf to part three with old repair and pasted on another paper. All parts with some stain. Browning in the beginning of the first part and throughout the second, pages 81-82 in the second with a minor hole a loss of letters. The last two leaves in the third part with loss of paper at margin. Contemporary uniform soft vellum, with handwritten titles on spines, and parts of ties preserved. Three volumes. Head of spine to volume one with tears. Fine. Brunet V, 115f. Graesse VI, 259. Part one and three are in the first edition. Part two is in the second. The strange collation in the third part is probably because it’s a continuation of the pagination of part two, in its first edition. It’s however complete. The Madrid 1605-edition was the first complete edition, followed by the Antwerp edition in 1607. In the first, from Geneva in 1602, only the first part was printed. It then run for several new editions during the 17th-centrury. Thomas Sanchez (1550-1610), entered the Society of Jesus in 1567 and for a time held the Office of Master of Novices at Granada. This, the "Disputationes de sancti matrimonii sacramento" - all aspects of the marriage - was his main work and the only one which he edited himself. It deals with every possible point of the subject and the third volume in some editions has been placed on the Index of Prohibited Books. But today it ranks as one of the classical works on marriage.
