Weak dampstain at top of first plate, cut in outer margin. Hole at head pp. 463/-64 (with slight loss of print on the latter) and pp. 465/-66. Engr. illustrations in the text pp. 395, 397-99 and 401. Worn contemporary full calf with richly gilt spine with raised bands and red label. All published. Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe (1684-1746), French author and adventurer. Finding himself at the Hague after a series of misfortunes and adulterous affairs, he founded the Journal littéraire in 1713. His first great success as a writer was entitled Chef-d’œuvre d’un inconnu, published in 1714 under the pseudonym Chrysostomus Mathanasius. The second edition (1740) of the “Memoires...” was also published under the main title “Mantanasiana”. Contains articles on travel, cultural history, literary criticism etc.
