Rudbeck, Olof

DISPUTATIO MEDICA DE PASSIONE HYPOCHONDRIACA...(diss., resp. Magnus Detterberg).

Upsala, 1697.
8vo. (4), 28 pp.Early treatise on hypochondria.
In 1691, Olof Rudbeck the younger succeeded his father Olof Rudbeck [1630-1702], as professor of medicine at Uppsala University.

In the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, hypochondria was a serious distemper featuring many characteristic ills, from nonspecific complaints like fatigue to problems of rumination on those complaints. It was, primarily, a distemper of men, the counterpart of hysteria in women (seated, as it was, not in the uterus, but in the upper abdomen [hypo=under; chondros=cartilage]).

Rudbeck 1123. Lidén I, p. 403. Waller 8287.Disbound. Title-leaf cut close in upper margin affecting a few letters.
