The story of the British Graham Land Expedition, from 1934-1937, led by the Australian surveyor John Rymill. It was an expedition that has been described as one of the first to successfully incorporate modern ideas with traditional polar methods developed in the Arctic. The expedition set a pattern of living and working in Antarctica that has influenced expeditions to follow. John Rymill describes how he brought together a group of Cambridge gentlemen, and sailed south on a three-masted sailing vessel, the PENOLA. He reccounts their three year voyage of hard work, while carrying through an ambitious plan of scientific exploration to completion.
