Folio (64.5 x 47 cm.) with 104 engraved plates (37 in colour), 8 maps and 4 views on double pages. Sturdy cloth portfolio. The Atlas accompanies the account of the first Russian circumnavigation of the world under the command of Krusenstern, together with Captain J. F. Lisianski, on the vessels Nadezhda and Neva. This atlas is of importance for the charting of the North Pacific, including the Aleutian Islands and particularly the area around Japan. Moreover, this Atlas also contains a large amount of representations of objects in the field of natural history common to this whole area. The original atlas, is of the utmost rarity, engraved and printed at the Printing Office of the Imperial Navy in St. Petersburg in 1813, was published in both Russian and German. The copy used for this facsimile is from the TENRI Library at Narra, Japan. Series: Bibliotheca Australiana 76.
