In the Days of the Canada Company: The Story of the Settlement of the Huron Tract and a View of the Social Life of the Period 1825-1850

Toronto William Briggs 1896, 1st Edition. Good to very good. 1896, 1st Edition. () xiv,[2],[17]-494pp. + [2]pp. (ads). Good to very good. Octavo in original gilt lettered and decorated maroon cloth and patterned endpapers with plates (including frontispiece) and illustrations in text. Old dampstain affecting bottom foredge at end of book with some minor rippling to leaves. Contemporary inscription dated Toronto, Oct. 26, '96 to Catherine Parr Trail from Edward S. Caswell. The book was later inscribed "For Dear Willie / One of his mothers books from his sister Kate". Rare thus. Catherine Parr Traill's copy inscribed by family friend Edward S. Caswell (author of "Canadian Singers and their Songs"), who would later write the intoduction to the 1st Canadian edition of Traill's "Backwoods of Canada" published by McCelland & Stewart in 1929. Traill died in 1899 and at some later date the book was given by her eldest dauhther Kate to her brother Willie (1844-1917) who, after serving with the the Hudson's Bay Company from 1864 in western Canada, retired to a farm near Prince Albert in 1893. Kate spent nearly two decades living with her mother at Westove taking care of the housework and looking after her mother's finances. Introduction by G. M. Grant. Catherine Parr Traill's Copy
