A retired literary agent, mourning the loss of his parents and only son, receives a postcard from a friend that causes him to return to the journals of a trip he took to his mother's birthplace to search for his roots. Winner of the National Book Award in 1977. With a bookplate signed by Wallace Stegner affixed to the half-title.
