Bierce, Ambrose.

A SON OF THE GODS AND A HORSEMAN IN THE SKY. Including an Introductionby W.C. Morrow.

1907 1st Photogravure frontispiece after a painting by Will Jenkins. San Francisco: Paul Elder and Company, 1907. First edition thus, one of 1,000 copies printed on Fabriano handmade paper. A pairing of two Civil War stories from Bierce's classic collection "Tales of Soldiers and Civilians" (1891). Bierce (1842-1914?) enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and, despite suffering a severe head wound at the Kenesaw Mountain in June 1864, served as a topographical officer until 1865. He would later transform his Civil War experiences into a number of powerful short stories. Volume four in Paul Elder's Western Classics series, designed by John Henry Nash. Inscribed by Bierce on a prefatory blank leaf. Vellum spine over blue paper-covered boards, with gilt stamping on the spine and front. In the uncommon jacket, with some mild darkening along the spine, and minor chipping to the top edge; otherwise a bright and crisp, exceptionally fresh copy. Housed in a handsome full gray morocco clamshell box with gilt-stamped lettering. BAL 1126. Provenance: From the Library of Edwin and Irma Grabhorn.
