Bade, William Frederic.

THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF JOHN MUIR.

1924 1st Two volumes. Photogravure frontispieces. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1924. First edition. John Muir (1838-1914) was a prolific letter writer. According to his daughter Helen, his first order of the day was to answer letters he had received and to initiate new correspondence when the need arose. In 1915, when Dr. Bade was commissioned by Muir's daughter to be his literary executor, Bade immediately began to collect letters or copies of letters. He reports that where he had hoped to locate a thousand letters, he finally accumulated nearly double that number. Compiling this work so soon after Muir's death gave him the additional opportunity to collect reminiscences from many people who had known Muir. Green cloth bindings, uniform with the previously published eight-volume edition of Muir's works (1914), with gilt-stamped leather spine labels. As most of these volumes were reserved for the 1,000 previous subscribers to The Works, an unstated, but comparatively small quantity of the first edition was made available to the general public, and consequently separate sets are uncommon. Small bookseller's label to the rear pastedowns, with a small bookplate to the front pastedown in v.1. Some wear and mild chipping to the spine labels; otherwise a very good set. Kimes, W.F. & M.B. Kimes: John Muir: A Reading Bibliography, #366.
