Hutchings, J.M.
IN THE HEART OF THE SIERRAS.
1886 1st The Yo Semite Valley, Both Historical and Descriptive: and Scenes By the Way. Big Tree Groves. The High Sierra, with Its Magnificent Scenery, Ancient and Modern Glaciers, and Other Objects of Interest; with Tables of Distance and Altitudes, Maps, etc. 152 photographs and illustrations, of which 121 are cuts in text. Three maps, including two folding. Oakland, California: Pacific Press Publishing House, 1886. First edition, first state with the riderless horse cart and the cabin minus the lean-to in the frontispiece photograph. Though he authored several works about the Yosemite region, this is Hutchings's most ambitious work, covering every aspect of Yosemite Valley and the big trees for the 19th century tourist more thoroughly than any other book of its time. It is an important primary source of information on the early human history of the region, and still considered authoritative on the early climbs in and exploration of the area. Original green cloth binding, decoratively stamped in gilt and black. The boards are lightly rubbed, with some very minor wear to the edges; otherwise a fine, very sharp copy. Currey, L. & D. Kruska: Bibliography of Yosemite, #175; Farquhar, F.: Yosemite, The Big Trees, and the High Sierra, p.73-77.
