Burrows, Rufus and Cyrus Hull.
A LONG ROAD TO STONY CREEK.
1971 1st Being the Narrative by Rufus Burrows & Cyrus Hull, of their Eventful Lives in The Wilderness West of 1848-1858. Introduction & Annotation by Richard Dillon. Four textual illustrations. Ashland, Oregon: Lewis Osborne, 1971. First edition, one of 650 numbered copies. Burrows, at the age of fourteen, left Kansas City with his family on April 1, 1848, took the overland route to South Pass, followed the Humboldt and Truckee rivers, and arrived at Sutter's Fort on September 9. His parents established a hotel nearby. Meanwhile, young Rufus earned his keep by herding horses and cattle, mining on Carson Creek, and working as a teamster. He also witnessed the killing of Lt. Roderick M. Morrison of the New York Volunteers by Dr. Erasmus French. Burrows eventually put down roots in Colusa County. Following these recollections is a long letter from his father-in-law, Cyrus B. Hull, dated March 26 and 28, 1875, from Newville, Colusa County, giving a memoir of his pioneer life. Tan linen binding, with gilt stamping. Issued without a dust jacket. A fine copy. Kurutz, G.: The California Gold Rush, #102.
