Rolle, Andrew.
JOHN CHARLES FREMONT: Character as Destiny.
1991 1st Frontispiece portrait, with 16 textual illustrations. Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1991. First edition. ISBN 080612380X. Renowned explorer, Civil War general, political leader, and hero of California's liberation from Mexico in 1846-47, Fremont (1813-90) remains an enigmatic and controversial figure in U.S. history. Intelligent and charismatic, he married Jessie Benton, daughter of powerful senator Thomas Hart Benton, and attained national prominence by the time he was 31. Fremont's early expeditions into the uncharted West inspired mass immigration to the region. In this psychologically probing, frequently unflattering biography, Fremont's womanizing and other character flaws ultimately undermine his achievements. Inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Rolle on the front flyleaf. Brown cloth binding, with red lettering. Some very light wear to the dust jacket; otherwise a crisp, very good copy.
