Taylor, Bayard.
ELDORADO, or, Adventures in the Path of Empire.
1949 1st Comprising a Voyage to California, via Panama; Life in San Francisco and Monterey; Pictures of the Gold Region, and Experiences of Mexican Travel. Introduction by Robert Glass Cleland. With illustrations by the author. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. First Borzoi edition, reissued during the Centennial of the California Gold Rush. Taylor (1825-78), a correspondent with the New York Tribune and renowned traveler, went to California to record the Gold Rush. He left New York on June 28, 1849, crossed the Isthmus of Panama and arrived in San Francisco on August 18. He visited the diggings between the Cosumnes and Mokelumne rivers, as well as the major camps. Shortly after attending the Constitutional Convention at Monterey, Taylor left San Francisco on January 1, 1850, on board the Oregon, along with several distinguished passengers including the newly-elected Senators Fremont and Gwin. Cleland's twelve-page introduction provides an excellent account of this key work's history and significance. Black cloth binding, with gilt stamping. Slight mustiness to the contents. Some mild browning and soiling to the dust jacket; otherwise a very good copy. Kurutz, G.: California Gold Rush, #618a; The Zamorano Eighty, #73.
