Ambrose, Stephen E.
UPTON AND THE ARMY.
1964 1st Nine pp. photographs and illustrations. Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1964. First edition. A scholarly, insightful account of the career and influence of a man who is now considered a pivotal figure in American military theory. As a commander in all three branches of the army - the infantry, artillery, and the cavalry - Emory Upton (1839-1881) had few equals. In the Civil War, he was made a brevet major general before his 26th year. He distinguished himself at Spotsylvania, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, in Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley campaign, and Wilson's celebrated cavalry raid through Alabama and Georgia. Subsequently, Upton traveled abroad as an observer for the army, and served as commandant of cadets at West Point and finally as commander of the Presidio at San Francisco. Elihu Root oversaw the posthumous publication of Upton's "The Military Policy of the United States" (1904), a work of lasting importance that had a great deal to do with the American army's performance in the two world wars. Blue cloth binding, with gilt lettering. The dust jacket is moderately shelfworn; otherwise a very good copy.
