Margaret of Navarre.
THE HEPTAMERON OF THE TALES OF MARGARET QUEEN OF NAVARRE.
1903 Newly Translated from the Authentic Text, with an Essay upon the Heptameron by George Saintsburg, M.A. Two volumes. Ten plates. London: Privately Printed for Members of the Aldus Society, 1903. One of 1,250 numbered copies. A collection of 72 short stories in the manner of Boccaccio that was first published in 1558, the "Heptameron" is the best known work of Margaret of Navarre (or Margaret of Angouleme, 1492-1549). The sister of King Francis I of France, Margaret married Henri d'Albret, king of Navarre in 1527; their daughter was Jeanne d'Albret. Margaret's brilliant court was frequented by literary men, including Etienne Dolet, Clement Marot, and Francois Rabelais. In one-half green morocco over green cloth bindings, with elaborate gilt stamping, five raised bands, and matching endpapers. Some very mild sunning along the spines, with a bit of minor wear to the spine ends and corners; otherwise a very good set.
