Barton, William E.
THE LINEAGE OF LINCOLN.
1929 1st 16 pp. photos and illustrations. Indianapolis, IN: Bobbs-Merrill Co., 1929. First edition. An important work on Lincoln's antecedents, this volume traces the genealogical history of the paternal Lincoln family and the maternal Hanks family, from their first known representatives to Abraham Lincoln. With reasonable certainty, Barton traces the Lincoln line back to Norfolk, England in the early 1600's, while identifying Thomas Hanks, a soldier under Cromwell, as the first of the American Hankses. Includes a chapter dedicated to the possible ancestral ties between Lincoln and Robert E. Lee, 135 pages of appended documents, and a critical bibliography. Brown cloth binding, with gilt titles. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front flyleaf, with remnants of the dust jacket and a variety of related Lincoln clippings tipped into the front and rear endpapers. Boards lightly sunned at the extremities; otherwise a very good copy. Angle, P.: A Shelf of Lincoln Books, p.65-66; Monaghan, J.: Lincoln Bibliography 1839-1939, #3079.
