Beveridge, Albert J.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, 1809-1858.

1928 1st Two volumes. 18 plates, including two photogravure frontispieces of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1928. First edition. This biography, which concludes with the Lincoln-Douglas debates, contains an unrivaled account of the Indiana period of Lincoln's life and is among the first to place Lincoln within the full framework of national history and to restore Stephen A. Douglas to his rightful place as an able, patriotic American who was a worthy rival of Lincoln. An indispensable work, incorporating an enormous body of primary source material and documentation that was left unfinished as a result of Beveridge's own untimely deat0. Blue cloth-covered boards, with gilt-stamped titles. Boards somewhat rubbed and lightly spineworn, and showing a bit at the corners; otherwise a very good set. Angle, P.: A Shelf of Lincoln Books, p.53-56; Monaghan, J.: Lincoln Bibliography 1839-1939, #2999.
