Baillou, court physician during the reign of Henry IV of France, is considered the first epidemiologist of modern times (see Garrison & Morton 60 for Baillou’s Opera omnia medica). “During the many epidemics in Paris between 1570 and 1579, Baillou developed the idea of the ephemerides, which influenced the work of Thomas Sydenham. He was thus the first Occidental epidemiologist since Hippocrates. He left excellent descriptions of the plague (and possibly of typhoid fever); of measles. . . and of diphtheria whose choking false membranes he identified. . . .” (DSB). Krivatsy 591.
