BEETON, Mrs. and JAMES, A. L., M.D.

The Housekeeper's Companion: The Household Book of Reference. Illustrated. All About Etiquette, The Household, Poultry, Domestic Pets, Poisons and Antidotes, Home Medicines

Flint Eddy Printing and Publishing House 1883, 419, (6) p. 22 cm. A few illus. in text. Hardcover. Waterstain on foredge, cover stained and some edge wear, hinges cracked, endpaper torn, owner's sig., some spotting, smudging and staining throughout. Mrs. Beeton's is the most famous English cookery book ever published. The first edition 'Book of Household Management' took four years to compile by the young housewife, and was published in 1861. It was an immediate success. The name 'Mrs. Beeton' is in fact now a licensed 'brand name', signifying 'traditional, classic, homely, comfortable, dependable, authoritative, historic, and British'. This edition seeems to be a conglomeration of Mrs. Beeton's and an American subscription medical book. It is a fascinating example of the marketing of Mrs. Beeton in Victorian times. A delightful book to delve into at any point, beginning with the section on 'outdoor etiquette': 'When meeting them in the street, always speak first to your milliner, mantua-maker, seamstress, or to any one you have been in the habit of employing'. Victorian printings of Mrs. Beeton books are now quite scarce.
