A Treatise on the Small-Pox and Measles

London Sydenham Society 1848, vii, 212, 40 p. 23 cm. Hardcover. Black cloth. Cover mildly worn, cracked at outer hinges, corners bumped. Hinges cracked, a few spots on half-title and t.p., stain near spine p. 62-5, corner torn p. 91, minor foxing throughout. G+M 2527.99. In his Treatise on the smallpox and measles, Rhazes stated that survival from smallpox infection prevented an individual from ever acquiring the disease again. His explanation for why the disease does not strike the same individual twice is the first theory of acquired immunity. This is the first English translation of the famous work of Rhazes, an author ranking with Hippocrates and Gales as the founders of clinical medicine.
