Blindstamp on t.p., bookplate removed, faint number on spine, however it is in quite solid condition. Strathern 262. A reprint of three pamphlets (Strathern 148, 148A, 362), each with a separate t.p., intro. & footnotes by Howay. Contemporaries in the fur trade, Dixon (a West Coast navigator) met Meares in the spring of 1787 sailing to Prince William Sound. Meare's ship was iced in and the crew was suffering either from scurvy (as he claimed) or from "uncontrolled application to spiritous liquor" as one of Dixon's traders claimed. In return for aid Meares promised to end his illegal trade on the coast. Dixon wrote a pamphlet criticizing Meares' published acc't of his 1788-89 voyages. a pamphlet war followed, with Dixon emerging as the winner (Dictionary of Cdn. Biography IV).
