Klinck in 'The Literary History of Canada', mentions The Dear Old Farm in his discussion of the kinds of canadian fiction 1880-1920, stating that the description of the Fenian Raids which appears among the simple sketches of early Ontario rural life, reads like a non-partisan, first-hand account.
