Front and back hinge cracked, endpapers loose with dark edges, inked date on front paste-down endpaper, ink marks on front free endpaper, back endpapers torn, some rough edges throughout especially at the front and back, owner's sig. on t.p., large hole in centre of p. iii, stain on p. xix, 12-17, 22-38, marking 27, 31, 274-5. The first edition of Dryden's prose translation of Du Fresnoy's poem on Painting. Also the first appearance of Dryden's essay on painting and poetry.
