PHILLIPS, Coles

A Gallery of Girls

Toronto Copp Clark 1911, 30 cm. 39 beautiful colour plates + lovely little b&w illus. Hardcover. Binding a bit loose in places, tear on top edge of 'The Midshipmite', light foxing on rear endpapers and last b&w illustration. This immaculate collection of prints contains both colour and black and white representations of female fashion and life at the turn of the century. The colour plate of 'RSVP' is one many will recognize. A nostalgic reminder of the finer things of life. The illustrations feature Phillips' trademark style of 'fadeaway girl', where the figures fade into the background, while leaving a full-figured suggestion of the lovely lady. When Life Magazine began to use colour on its covers in 1908, the Fadeaway Girl made her initial appearance and was an instant success.
