MORRIS, William, trans.

The Aeneids of Virgil

London Longmans, Green and Co. 1902, iii, 238 p. 29 cm. Hardcover. Spine sunned. Cracked at signature p. 56-57. First printed in 1876. Reprinted at the Chiswick Press with the Golden type designed by William Morris for the Kelmscott Press. Kelmscott Press: the private press founded at Hammersmith, London in 1891 by William Morris in close association with Emery Walker. They turned for their inspiration to the roman types of the 15th century and woodcut title pages. Work was based on the double page opening as a unit. The fifty or so books to leave the press during the eight years of its existence had a great influence on other private press owners in England, Germany and America. The quality of materials used, with the care and attention given to detail make them a fine achievement. There were costly, collected by eager bibliophiles, and usually over-subscribed before publication. (Among) the special types cut for Morris by E.P. Prince, (was) the Golden, 1890, based on types of Jensen and Rubeus. Chiswick Press: the imprint first used in 1811 by the elder Charles Whittingham, when he moved his printing business to Chiswick near London. The name was later used by his nephew, Charles Whittingham II, for his premises in Took's Court, London. From 1885 until 1919 the press was directed by Charles Thomas Jacobi (1853-1933), noted for his attention to design, and the firm continued to print high-class work until it ceased trading in 1962. - Glaister's Glossary of the Book.
