HEAD, Sir Francis Bond

A Narrative

London John Murray 1839, 488, 38 p. appendices, + cat. 23 cm. 1st edition. Appendix A is Memorandumon the Aborigines of North America. Hardcover. Green cloth. New endpapers, spine sunned, appendices are unopened, small tear at bottom of page 429. TPL 2275. The Narrative is Head's own account of his administration of Upper Canada, 1836-38, with comments on Lord Durham's Report, 1839. "Though professedly a Liberal, he pursued in Canada a reactionary policy, and his attitude had not a little to do with the outbreak of the rebellion of 1837. He resigned in Sept. 187 over a dispute with the Home gov't, but was not relieved until Jan. 1838, so it fell to Head to deal with the rebellion in Upper Canada. Though he succeeded in crushing the rebels, his conduct was so erratic and irresponsible that he was never again given public employment." (Encyclopedia of Canada). Carl Klinck states that Head was one of the patrons of Henry Rowsell's printing business, and calls him "an essayist of considerable charm". (Literary History of Canada).
