Elder is considered one of the most important avant-garde filmmakers in Canada. His project "The Book of All the Dead" is his best known work, an ambitious exercise spanning nearly two decades and 40 hours of film. He is also one of very few authors to write serious critical interpretations of Canadian avant-garde film.
