CHANDRASEKHAR, S

Ellipsoidal Figures of Equilibrium

New Haven Yale University Press 1969, ix, 252 p. 24 cm. Yale University Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman Memorial Lectures, Forty Second Volume. Brown cloth hardcover. Dust jacket with small chips. Owner's sig. on title page. The Silliman Foundation was established in memory of Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman, and an annual course of lectures is held under the auspices of the foundation with the purpose of illustrating the presence and providence of God as manifest in the natural and moral world. Dogmatic and Polemical theology are strictly prohibited in favour of nature and history. Special focus at the lectures are given to astronomy, chemistry, geology and anatomy. From the dustjacket: "Classical investigations on the ellipsoidal figures of equilibrium of liquid masses are here enlarged by Chandrasekhar into a complete and coherent mathematical theory. The author develops and completes the basic ideas put forth in three fundamental papers by Dirichlet, Dedekind, and Riemann over a century ago, which have been all but ignored since that time. The various problems are solved by a method and a technique that are essentially elementary, and a number of common misconceptions and errors are corrected."
