Diary of Nelson Kingsley, A California Argonaut of 1849

Berkeley University of California Press 1914, First edition. Volume 3, No. 3 of the Publications ofthe Academy of Pacific Coast History. Original printed wrappers. A fine copy. Kinglsey's diary covers the period February 8, 1849 to March 4, 1851, during which he traveled from New Haven around the Horn to San Francisco. Kingsley entered into the shipping business on the Sacramento River between Sacramento and San Francisco and then turned to prospecting near Mormon Island and later worked a "Quicksilver Machine" in the Yuba-Marysville area. Throughout, Kingsley recorded the mining activities and events in Sacramento, Marysville, and San Francisco. "A drop-dead diary of the Gold Rush … if they read it, you won't have a dissatisfied customer" (Mead Kibbey). [Cowan: p. 331; Kurutz: 378; Rocq: 15899].
