Co-authored by Grinnell, Harold Child Bryant, and Tracy Irwin Storer. The colored plates are after drawings by Louis Agassiz Fuertes and Allan Brooks. A very scholarly work on the subject. Not only is every California game bird covered, but chapters also include, "Decrease of game and its causes," "The natural enemies of game birds," "The gun club in California," "The propagation of game birds," etc. Also includes a glossary of special terms, the method of taking measurements, etc.
