Lakier's account was the first comprehensive description of America written by a Russian. First published in Russia in 1859, this first English language edition includes an excellent introduction by Henry Steele Commager who points out some illuminating similarities between Lakier's account and that of the celebrated observer of nineteenth-century America, Alexis de Tocqueville.
