Martin, Captain Henry Byam

The Polynesian Journal of...

Salem Peabody Museum of Salem 1981, First edition. 192pp. Illustrated with water colors (20 in color), wash drawings and pen & ink sketches from the originals by Captain Martin. Notes, index. Blue cloth. A fine copy with slightly chipped pictorial dust jacket. Admiral Martin's first command in the British Navy was captain of the 50-gun frigate, H.M.S. Grampus, in the year 1846. He was ordered to sail from Plymouth around the Horn to Hawaii for further orders which then sent him to Tahiti for a year. This is the first publication of Martin's daily Journal and provides an on-the-scene report from the English point of view of the French subjugation of the Tahitians by bloody force.
